The Oud Scent Pyramid Explained

A fragrance unfolds in time. The scent pyramid is the simple model perfumers use to describe that movement: what you smell first, what carries the middle hours, and what remains. With oud, the pyramid matters more than usual, because the base is so present that it shapes everything above it.
Three layers, three speeds
The layers reflect how quickly materials evaporate. Top notes are the lightest and most volatile, heart notes take over once they recede, and base notes are heavy molecules that anchor the perfume and stay for hours.
Top notes: the opening
Top notes give the first impression: citrus, spice, fruit, fresh florals. Over a deep oud base they have to be chosen carefully, so they lead into what follows rather than clash with it. In D’Or Davana, davana and saffron with mango and black pepper open the fragrance. In Amber Mirage it is tea and cardamom with bergamot and apricot.
Heart notes: the character
The heart emerges after the opening and carries the fragrance for several hours. This is where its personality lives: florals, woods, softer spices. In Amber Mirage, cashmere wood, cedarwood and vetiver give a textured, grounded heart. In Soleil Levant, magnolia, heliotrope and ylang-ylang sit over sandalwood.
Base notes: the foundation
Base notes stay longest and decide how long a perfume lasts. They need materials with low volatility, and natural oud is one of the most stable. It brings a resinous, woody, slightly animalic depth. In Oud Amal Intense, oud rests with frankincense and vanilla; at 35 percent it lasts 18 to 24 hours on skin, depending on skin. Soleil Levant, Amber Mirage and D’Or Davana, at 30 percent, last 12 to 24 hours depending on skin, longer on fabric.
How oud shapes the whole
Natural oud does not wait politely at the bottom. It reaches into the heart, adding depth to florals and weight to spice, and it develops differently on different skin. Reading a pyramid helps you anticipate a fragrance, but only wearing it shows how the layers move into one another. Each material is placed with intention, so that the passage from the first spray to the last trace on the skin feels seamless.
To follow the pyramid yourself, spray once on the wrist and smell after a few minutes, again after an hour and again in the evening. The Discovery Set lets you do this with three extraits.
