The Rarest Wood on Earth
Oud — also called agarwood, aloeswood, or in Arabic عود — is the dark, resinous heartwood formed inside the Aquilaria tree when it becomes infected with a specific mould. Only a small percentage of wild Aquilaria trees produce this precious resin, making genuine oud one of the rarest natural materials used in perfumery.
For millennia, oud has been treasured across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Japan. In Arabian culture, it is burned as incense (bukhoor) during gatherings and ceremonies. In Japanese kōdō tradition, it is appreciated as an art form. Today, it is the cornerstone of modern niche perfumery.
Why Is Oud So Expensive?
The economics of oud are extraordinary:
- Scarcity: Only a small share of Aquilaria trees develop the infection that triggers oud formation
- Time: The resin takes years to mature to its full aromatic potential
- Harvesting: Each tree must be carefully evaluated and the heartwood extracted by hand
- Yield: A single tree may produce only a few grams of the highest-quality oud oil
High-grade oud oil is among the most expensive natural materials in perfumery — often compared to the price of gold.
Real Oud vs. Synthetic Alternatives
The fragrance industry is flooded with synthetic oud accords. While these provide an approximation of oud’s smoky-sweet character, they lack the depth, complexity, and evolution that real oud offers on skin.
Authentic oud reveals itself in layers:
- Top: Sweet, slightly medicinal, sometimes barnyard-like
- Heart: Rich, woody, with hints of leather and honey
- Base: Deep, warm, meditative — lingering for hours
M’OUD’s Approach to Oud
At M’OUD Switzerland, every fragrance is built around authentic oud. Our Extrait de Parfum concentrations (25–35%) ensure the oud note develops its full character throughout the day.
Oud Amal Intense, with 35% fragrance oil concentration, showcases this philosophy: a strictly limited, numbered edition that evolves from the first spray to the last whisper, hours later.
The Sustainability Question
Wild Aquilaria trees are under significant pressure. Responsible oud means treating this material with care — and giving back. M’OUD plants one tree for every bottle sold through our One Bottle, One Tree initiative, contributing to reforestation.
The future of oud depends on brands that treat this extraordinary material with the respect it deserves.
